Animesh Bhuyan, a twenty-eight-year-old youth leader, is thought to have suffered major injuries to his private parts. His death was still awaiting a post mortem report.
After being attacked by an unruly mob in Jorhat on Monday, Bhuyan was declared dead at the hospital.
What CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says
“The post mortem report is awaited,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, condemning Bhuyan’s horrific killing. “However, preliminary findings suspected injuries in his private parts.”
On Tuesday, Sarma announced a Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to the victim’s family.
Sarma described the incident as “unfortunate” and stated that the present government would never accept such behaviour, adding that individuals responsible for the incident would be tried in a “fast track court” and given severe punishment.
In the meantime, he ordered Assam Police to prepare a charge sheet for the incident within one month and asked Special DGP GP Singh to personally supervise the investigation.
The court on this case
The court has ordered that seven of the accused be held in police custody for five days for further interrogation. The seven had been remanded for a week by Jorhat police.
In addition, five other accused were placed in judicial custody. One of the arrested accused did not appear in court. His medical evaluation was supposed to be on the way, according to sources.
Previously, the Jorhat district magistrate ordered Sub-divisional magistrate Akashee Duwarah to undertake a magisterial investigation into the event that resulted in the death of Animesh Bhuyan (28) at the Jorhat town truck halt point. Duwarah was given 10 days to submit her investigation report to the undersigned, including all results.
Why was Animesh Bhuyan attacked
An angry mob attacked Bhuyan and his two companions after a ‘misunderstanding’ over an accident in the area. While Bhuyan and others were assisting a guy who had been injured, locals suspected them of hitting the person and began thrashing them. Bhuyan is said to have died on his way to the hospital afterwards.
