Arms smuggling attempt of ULFA(I) foiled by Assam Rifles along Assam-Arunachal Border

On Tuesday, the 30th of November the Assam rifles personnel apprehended a 38-year old, ULFA(I) cadre in the Jagun area of Tinsukia district, near the Assam-Arunachal border.

Where is Jagun?

Jagun is a small market in Margherita Tehsil in Tinsukia District of north-eastern state of Assam, India. It is located around 7kms away from nearest coalfield Tipong, 11kms away from Lekhapani, 17kms away from Tirap Gaon and 20kms away from Ledo- the easternmost broad gauge railway station in India.

About ULFA(I)

ULFA

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is an armed separatist organization operating in the Northeast Indian state of Assam. It’s objective is to establish an independent sovereign nation state of Assam for the indigenous people of Assam through an armed struggle. In 1990,the organization was banned by the Government of India citing it as a terrorist organization.

On 3rd September 2011, a tripartite agreement for “Suspension of Operations” against ULFA was signed between the Indian government, the Assam government and the ULFA.

The details of the incident

The ULFA(I) cadre was arrested on Tuesday, during an operation in Tinkupani Reserve forest in Jagun along the inter-state border.
The individual has been identified as Girindra Chetia alias Pabitra Asom, a resident of Jangani village under Bordubi police station in Tinsukia district.

The Assam Rifles troops also seized a 9mm pistol and three rounds od live ammunition from his possession.

The aftermath of the incident

According to sources, the detained ULFA(I) rebel has been handed over to Tinsukia police by the Assam Rifles forces. Meanwhile, further interrogation of the arrested rebel by top police officials continues, said sources.
