Assam: A new toll gate at the Bogibeel bridge, which offers road access between the Assam districts of Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, and Dhemaji, as well as individuals from Arunachal Pradesh, is expected to open soon.

As per reports, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the state of Assam are working hard to get the proposed toll gate up and running.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Assam government, as per sources, are adamant about making the planned toll gate operational.

The NHAI has been erecting toll gates to recoup the costs of maintaining the motorways that travel through the state, despite protests from locals and many organizations.

Locals are concerned that once the toll plaza is operational, traffic will increase.

AASU protested the installation of toll gate

“We have not seen any reason behind the opening of a toll plaza in Bogibeel. It would increase the hardships of the people who have been suffering a lot due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We demand the government and NHAI repeal their decision,” a representative of a local organization said

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) protested the installation of a toll gate at Bogibeel Bridge’s south bank approach road in Dibrugarh in September 2021.

For nearly two hours, members of the AASU Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, and Lakhimpur units protested, impeding traffic on the important roadway.

Members held placards and banners against the government and shouted anti-government slogans to draw attention to the cause.

“Patients coming from Dhemaji and Lakhimpur to Dibrugarh for treatment will face a problem if the toll gate is erected. This is not a four-lane… then why is the government setting up a toll gate here? We want the removal of the same”, Abani Kumar Gogoi, president of the AASU Dibrugarh unit, stated.
