A doctor working at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in the district of Dibrugarh has been arrested by police on charges of alleged rape of a female doctor.

A female doctor has filed a complaint against Dr. Sunmoni Bhuyan, a registrar in the surgical unit of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), after which the accused was arrested and booked under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion) of the IPC. As of now, the accused doctor has been sent to 14-day judicial custody.

As per the statement of the SP of Dibrugarh, Shwetank Mishra, the victim in her FIR, had accused the doctor of raping her and extorting money on the pretext of marriage. He added, “The victim in her FIR has mentioned that she was involved in a relationship with the accused doctor since 2018. She also accused him of tricking her into a physical relationship on a false promise of marriage. She also accused him of extorting a large amount of money from her during their relationship.”

However, during an interrogation, the accused said that he had an affair with the complainant and had to cancel his marriage due to his parent’s opposition. Dr. Bhuyan, a native of the Dhemaji district, said that his parents had even threatened suicide if he marries her.
