A 24-hour shutdown has been announced in Manipur by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) which formed to seek justice for social activist Athuan Abonmai‘s murder. The 24-hour shutdown has been declared from midnight of October 3.
Athuan was abducted on September 22 and murdered by suspected NSCN-IM militants in Tamenglong district. He was an advisor and former president of Zeliangrong Baudi, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland (AMN).
CM Biren Singh informs HM Amit Shah
Meanwhile, Manipur CM Biren Singh has stated that he will apprise Home Minister Amit Shah about the protest over the killing of Abonmai all over Manipur.
The Manipur government has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asking for an NIA probe into the killing of Athuan Abonmai.
NIA investigation called
The Ministry of Home Affairs has given a go-in-advance to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to conduct an investigation into the kidnapping and homicide case of Manipur tribal chief Athuan Abonmai.
Special Secretary(Home), Government of Manipur, H Gyan Prakash released an order on Friday, mentioning that the Ministry of Home Affairs (order No.11011/63/2021/NIA dated 30-09-2021) has issued orders directing the NIA to handle the further investigation of the case.
Protests against the murder
Multiple Civil Society Organizations and student bodies of Manipur took to the streets, protesting for justice in the Athuan Abonmai homicide case.
On September 28, the police officials had nabbed 2 suspects connected to the killing of Abonmai. The Ministry of Home Affairs ordered an NIA probe into Manipur Chief Athuan Abonmai’s murder.
Expressing unity with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) representative members from sixteen civil society organizations staged a joint sit-in protest on the network corridor of Keisampat Leimajam Leikai in Imphal on September 27.
The case was handed over to the NIA on September 26 after the state Home Department wrote to the Ministry of Home Affair on September 25, suspecting the act to be completed by NSCN (IM) cadres, speculating anxiety among the bordering states.
Athuan’s body found; shot and killed
Athuan Abonmai’s body was found on September 22 alongside the Tamenglong-Tamei avenue after armed miscreants allegedly shot him in the head.
Abonmai was kidnapped and killed 28 km away from a public event in Tamenglong district wherein the CM additionally was also present.
