Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma attended a conference with Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited (WAPCOS)on September 5, 2021. The meeting was attended by many including Union Minister for Housing, Urban Affairs & Irrigation Ashok Singhal.
The dignitaries discussed the usage of modern technology to be applied in many developmental projects including LIDAR survey techniques, space technology, drones, etc to be used for Assam’s developmental projects and in flood and water management, irrigation, traffic management.

What is LIDAR survey technology?
‘LIDAR’ stands for Light Detection and Ranging. This procedure aids in various survey-related projects. LIDAR uses laser technology, a scanner, and a GPS receiver that helps to understand the topography and creates a 3D model based on the surveillance by the technology.
Flood Situation in Assam
Almost every year during monsoon Assam faces flood which not only costs lives but also affects many- displacing people from their homes, inundation of national parks, many people lose their livestock, etc.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority(ASDMA), floods that occurred this year claimed almost five lives, affecting 6,47,606 people in 22 out of the 34 districts in Assam. Many people have moved to relief camps following the floods. The Brahmaputra River along with others has observed a rise in the water level, Nalbari and Darrang has surpassed other districts affected by this disaster.
In Kaziranga National Park, the floods have displaced many animals killing a few, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier in due concern tweeted about vehicles to avoid NH 715 for commuting between lower and upper Assam.
