Fire at pediatric ward of AMCH, 10 newborn safety evacuated; Fire broke out at ventilator donated by PM-CARE

In a horrendous incident at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, a fire broke out at the paediatric ward on Wednesday, November 10.

• How did the fire break out?

The fire is believed to have been caused by means of a ventilator donated from PM-CARE. As per the reports obtained through sources, 10 newborn have been harmlessly evacuated.

• What does the previous records denote?

As per the previous records, this is not the first time that a fire broke out in AMCH. In 2020, an infant, who was reportedly on ventilation support in the intensive care unit (ICU), died after the disconnection of the power supply due to the fire. However, AMCH superintendent, Indra Chutia justified the infant’s death as he conveyed his death was not related to the fire rather it was because of the adequate power backup in the ICU.

Assam Medical College and hospital (AMCH), formerly proclaimed as Berry White Medical School, is a public medical school and hospital in Dibrugarh, Assam, India. However, it was the first medical college in Assam and whole North-Eastern India and is the tertiary medical referral centre for Upper Assam and areas in neighbouring states, including Arunachal Pradesh. The college has been ranked 62 in the list of government institutes and has been rated AAA+ by the Medical Council of India with a score of 273.5.
