Manipur: Journalist gets beaten up by Congress workers, FIR lodged

A group of 20 Congress workers allegedly attacked a Manipur journalist who was working as a correspondent for a vernacular newspaper. 

According to a media report, the police have filed a report in connection with the incident.

The journalist was assaulted in Manipur’s Thoubal district, according to reports. 

According to the report, the victim is Elangbam Rameshwar, an Imphal-based correspondent for Naharolgi Thousand.

Around 20 people, members of the Block Congress in the Heirok constituency of Thoubal district, raided the home of Elangbam Rameshwar on Sunday morning, according to reports. 

According to the claim, the journalist was beaten up in front of his family by purported Congress workers.

Elangbam Rameshwar is the vice-president of the Thoubal District Journalists’ Union, according to the article.

Fight for justice

Rameshwar was taken to the hospital after being assaulted and suffering injuries. 

The Thoubal District Journalists’ Union has requested that those responsible for the attack be held accountable.

Several residents blocked the Heirok road in protest of the assaulted journalist. 

According to the article, authorities have opened an inquiry into the incident after filing a report. However, no one has been charged as a result of the incident.
