UP & Delhi tops list of crimes against women: 46% rise in complaints in 2021 against 2020

An estimation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) statistics indicated that there has been a rise in 46% complaints of crimes against women during January to August this year against the same period last year.

Crimes against women did not drop

However, crimes against women did not drop, despite the severity of the second wave of COVID-19 in the country. In the first eight months, over half of the complaints of crime against women were from Uttar Pradesh, NCW said.

Why is there a surge in complaints?

NCW chief Rekha Sharma, in this regard, said, because the commission has been regularly conducting awareness programs, there has been a surge in the complaints due to which people are currently more aware of its work.

Number of complaints received

In this year, a total of 19,953 complaints were reported between January and August, the corresponding figure for the same period the previous year was 13,618.

However, this year Women from Karnataka have filed 350 complaints with the NCW so far, with Bengaluru district topping the list for 62.28% of the total complaints from the state.

According to NCW statistics, the Bengaluru Rural district comes a distant 2nd with 26 complaints of women crimes followed by Mysore (16) and Dakshina Kannada (14).

Highest in the month

As many as 3,248 complaints were received by the National Commission for Women in July, since June 2015 which is the highest in a month, it further adds.

However, of the 19,953 reports, under the right to live with dignity clause the highest number of complaints, 7,036 were listed, followed by 4,289 reports of domestic violence and 2,923 reports of harassment of married women or dowry harassment, the NCW stated.

Whereas emotional abuse of women, the right to live with dignity clause takes into account. 1,116 complaints on molestation, 1,022 complaints on rape are reported.

Regarding the offense of outraging the modesty of women or molestation as many as 1,116 complaints have been reported, 1,022 cases of attempt to rape and rape cases reported, and 585 complaints of cybercrimes.

The Commission stated, among the union territories and states, a massive number of complaints were received from UP (10,084), followed by Delhi (2,147), Haryana (995), and Maharashtra (974).
