A Twitter user, who went by the name ‘Criccrazyygirl’ had decided to use the platform in the most wrong manner possible. The person had posed a rape threat to a nine-month-old child, Vamika Kohli, daughter of Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma. Following the week-long incident, a man from Hyderabad has been linked and arrested.
Possible purpose of the troll
The account and gruesome tweet were deleted, but its screenshot was amplified, catching the attention of netizens and receiving their condemn. Apparently, the toddler “is getting rape threats because he (Virat Kohli, father) decided to stand by his Muslim teammate, call out bigotry, and say discrimination on the basis of religion is wrong” tweeted social news reporter, Andre Borges.
Mohammed Shami Ahmed is an Indian cricketer. He was subjected to online abuse on Twitter and Instagram, soon after the match between India and Pakistan.
Virat Kohli slammed these trolls that questioned Shami’s ‘patriotism’, saying, “To me, attacking someone over their religion is the most pathetic thing. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion. But personally, I have never, ever, ever thought of discriminating against someone over their religion. That is a very personal and sacred thing to everyone and that should be left there. People take out their frustrations because they have no understanding of what we do as individuals and how much effort we put on the field.”
It was this post after which the rape threat was issued. The identity had remained anonymous, and nobody knew who the unknown troller was, or which country they belonged to.
Hyderabad man Accused
The accused person was identified to be a 23-year-old man from Hyderabad. He goes by the name Ramnagesh Alibathini. By profession, Ramnagesh is said to be a software engineer. Reportedly, in the past, he had also worked for a food delivery application.
Arrested by Mumbai Police
Alibathini was held by a special team of Mumbai Police in the afternoon of November 10, Wednesday. The Police stated that he is being brought to Mumbai.
Initial Reaction and Support by Netizens
An obvious slur upsurge of hatred and condemnation had flowed over the internet right after the rape threat was issued, which was about a week ago. Many cricket fans and supporters came in with encouraging voices to Virat Kohli.
Rahul Gandhi also tweeted on November 2, “Dear Virat, these people are filled with hate because nobody gives them any love. Forgive them. Protect the team.”
